The Process
Decanning
The first step is removing the outer metal shell of the catalytic converter to reclaim the catalyst which contains the PGMs (Platinum Group Metals). The most common and valuable of these are Platinum, Palladium, and Rhodium.
Milling
Once the catalyst has been removed and collected it’s placed in a tumble mill. Over a few hours, the catalyst becomes uniformly mixed powder. Which is then removed, bagged, and labeled for each individual customer.
Lab Analysis
A sample is then taken from the combined material and put through a series of lab processes including chemical & microwave digestion prior to ICP-MS (Inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry) & XRF (X-ray fluorescence). These measure the the quanity of metals present in the sample.
Smelting
After the batch sample testing has been completed it’s sent off to be separated and smelted down to its individual precious metals which can then be recycled into dozens of other industries, but most often are recycled into new catalytic converters.
